Schwarzenegger Cautious About New "Terminator Salvation" Movie

"The Terminator" will be back next summer, but the original killer robot, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a bit puzzled by this new model, at least so far.

"I still don't know how it will play out with this one," said the star-turned-governor, who said he was given a private screening of early footage from "Terminator Salvation" by producers of the franchise reboot. "They showed me some footage, but I don't have a feel for the movie. I didn't see enough. I wasn't sure who the Terminator was. I don't know if there is one or if he's the star or the hero. These are the things that determine the success and how the strong the movie will be."

This will be the fourth of the "Terminator" films but the first without the Austrian-born muscleman who became an international film legend in the role of an assassination machine with cool sunglasses and a deadpan delivery. "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" in 2003 was Schwarzenegger's last starring role before he gave up Hollywood for Sacramento.

Schwarzenegger loves to talk Hollywood, and Friday afternoon he chatted about his favorite recent movies -- he absolutely loved "Wanted," for instance, and he says Will Ferrell movies are so funny that he's getting "a six-pack" of abs from all the laughing -- and he addressed the topic of a new "Terminator" for the first time in any depth.

Schwarzenegger has been playing a different sort of "Terminator" these days -- last week he ordered the layoffs of 10,000 state employees. He has said that move, along with sweeping salary reductions for state workers, will take pressure off the California coffers during the continuing budget impasse in Sacramento.

"Terminator Salvation" is being filmed now in New Mexico and stars Christian Bale, who wears the mask of Batman in this summer's history-making hit, "The Dark Knight." Bale won't be a Terminator robot -- just the opposite, he plays a grown-up John Connor, the leader of the ragged human resistance against machine-men oppressors of the future.

"Salvation," directed by the filmmaker McG, will be a prequel to "The Terminator," the landmark 1984 film directed by James Cameron. In 1991, Cameron and Schwarzenegger teamed again for "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," which grossed more than $200 million in U.S. theaters.
"Salvation" is trying to pay homage to that history even as it charts its own course. McG ("Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle") sought out Cameron's blessing for "Salvation," which is far more bleak, unsettling and savage than the third film in the series, directed by Jonathan Mostow. "Salvation" producers also arranged for the governor to see an early "sizzle reel," a montage of scenes of the sort shown at Comic-Con International last month, where "Salvation" was popular with fans.

Schwarzenegger was polite but cautious when he was asked what he thought of the reel. "I've seen very little footage, so I don't really have a feel for it. I hope they do well, and I hope it is a huge hit. I do hope it creates a spectacle on the screen. That is what James Cameron created."

"The politician, who turned 61 last week, remains an ardent booster of Hollywood. Despite the crises around him in the state capital, he gushed about what a wonderful season it has been for popcorn entertainment. "It shows how important Hollywood is to our state economy and how much people love movies," he said.

But will Schwarzenegger be able to watch any new "Terminator" film and not feel a pang of loss?

"No, the same thing happened with bodybuilding," he said. "Seven times I won the IFBB Mr. Olympia title, a record, no one had done that. Then someone else [South Carolina native Lee Haney] won it eight times. Do I sit and say, 'Darn it, my record is gone' or 'Darn, I'm not up there on stage'? No, because I've moved into other phases of my life. I moved on from bodybuilding into entertainment. Then I moved on from entertainment into a political life. Now this is the most exciting experience of my life. When this movie comes out, I won't be sitting there saying, 'Why can't I do that?' I hope it makes a lot of money and is very successful."

2008 IFBB New York Pro Women's Bodybuilding Championships Results and Photos

2008 IFBB New York Pro Women's Bodybuilding Championship

May 10th, 2008
New York City New York

It was only just a week ago on May 3rd when the Tribeca Performing Arts Theatre in downtown Manhattan played host to the ‘100 Most Influential People Awards', and although the May 10th weekend set aside at the same venue for the 2008 IFBB New York Pro Bodybuilding Championships may not have managed to land anyone in that very prestigious group, it did go a long way in establishing three qualifiers for the upcoming 2008 IFBB Ms. Olympia contest - that most influential bodybuilding event in the world of muscle. Sponsored by Species Nutrition , this year's Big Apple muscle bash drew a solid field of 20 contestants from nine countries. As diverse as the number of countries represented, the diversity also followed in the range of physiques to be judged.

Ever since Cathy Lefrancois decided it was her desire to return to bodybuilding after making an ill-fated switch to figure competitions in 2005, she has been tunnel-focused in her efforts. The culmination of those efforts can to fruition on Saturday night when she returned to the top of the victory stand with an overall look that was exactly what judges had in mind as a champion and IFBB Olympia qualifier.

In a first round prejudging callout that included Rosemary Jennings, Debi Laszewski,
Lefrancois, Jeannie Paparone, Annie Rivieccio and Dena Westerfield, a top six had been quickly established. Each woman in her own way presented a decidedly different look as virtually none of the first six called out carried a strong resemblance to any other in the group. Still, it was Lefrancois who stood out with her dazzling combination of structural balance, muscular detail, stage presence, and special attention personal appearance to that others were missing at some level.

Lefrancois also played giant killer in this field as a 5-2, 130-pound veteran competitor (the smallest in this event) that many fans might forget has been at the pro level since 1995. In fact, before her dabbling in figure contests during 2005, Lefrancois had placed fourth at two IFBB Ms. Olympias in 2000 and 2003. She also won her class at the 2003 IFBB Ms. International. That victory in the '03 IFBB Ms. International was Lefrancois' last pro bodybuilding victory and she was overjoyed to earn her first win in five years.

Along the way to this IFBB New York Pro victory, Lefrancois finished ninth at the 2006 IFBB Atlantic City Pro, followed by a 10th-place finish at the 2007 IFBB Ms. International.

Taking another year to further return to the level of physique she felt she needed to favorably impress bodybuilding judges, Lefrancois returned once again to the IFBB Ms. International in 2008 and dazzled everyone with a sixth-place finish that many observers felt went undervalued. She came away from that event frustrated in having missed qualifying for the IFBB Ms. Olympia by one placing.

So, once again she went into tunnel vision mode and trained with a passion that went above and beyond mere mortals as she even continued to train with an injury that included broken bones in her foot that tested her pain threshold on a daily basis.

The result was well worth the wait. "I'm very happy," said the understated Lefrancois after her win. "I wanted to prove I could be a good bodybuilder again, and I wanted to make it back to the 2008 IFBB Ms. Olympia. Now I have five months to be the best I have ever been when it comes time to go to Las Vegas."

For her efforts, Lefrancois collected $4,000 for her first place finish.

Runner-up Jeannie Paparone, by virtue of her placement and winning $2,000 in the process, also has five months before she competes at the 2008 IFBB Ms. Olympia in Las Vegas. The difference is she lives in Las Vegas, so she will become an automatic hometown favorite. For Paparone, this event was also a bodybuilding homecoming making her first appearance in a pro contest since she competed at the IFBB Europa in 2006. The middleweight winner at the 2002 NPC Nationals, Paparone made her pro debut at the 2003 IFBB Night of Champions (finishing third) and was a solid placer who had designs on qualifying for the IFBB Ms. Olympia long before this 2008 contest.

"Better late than never," said Paparone with a wide grin. "My life is back on the right track now and I feel good about coming back to competition. I had some personal things to straighten out, and now I feel that I can give bodybuilding the effort it deserves. I worked hard to get into the shape I reached at this contest, and I'm thrilled the judges noticed. I've always had a goal to compete in the IFBB Ms. Olympia, and to be able to do it where I live is very special."

The level of condition Paparone showed here was also special. In fact she was finely detailed throughout her physique with her frontal pecs, back and traps highlighting her newly crafted physique. She was spot on, and left little with which to find fault.

Grabbing the third and final 2008 IFBB Ms. Olympia qualifying position was former New Yorker Rosemary Jennings. This event's designated ‘block of granite', Jennings, who was the 2002 overall NPC USA champion, carried a level of muscle density unmatched in the entire field. Another veteran performer who was coming off her appearance at the 2008 IFBB Ms. International, Jennings showed her patented forearms, thick lats, and a set of triceps that were strikingly cross-striated. A former overall winner at this contest in 2005, her third-place purse of $1,000 helped soften the blow of not repeating her second New York win.

Top Fivers
Without the convenience of viewing an official score sheet after the event had ended, we can only make an assumption as to who finished fourth and fifth overall. Based on the fact that both Dena Westerfield and Debi Laszewski were brought out in the final top five before the field was narrowed to the top three, Laszewski and Westerfield would be logical choices. During the awards presentation, Laszewski was honored with a ‘Best Poser' award, but it would be a sure bet she would have gladly traded that award for a qualifying position at the IFBB Ms. Olympia.

2008 IFBB New York Pro Men's Bodybuilding Results and Photos

2008 IFBB New York Pro Men's Bodybuilding Championship

May 10th, 2008
New York City, New York

Men's Open
Against conventional wisdom, Kai Greene entered the 2008 IFBB New York Pro Show 8 weeks after his 3rd place finish at the 2008 IFBB Arnold Classic. Many so-called experts thought it would be impossible for him to peak twice in such a short period of time and many "in the know" questioned whether a poor performance might hurt his chances of placing high at the 2008 IFBB Mr. Olympia come September. Kai Greene silenced all the naysayers and stormed onto the stage at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in downtown Manhattan in true "Predator" form. After one set of quarter turns was complete, all the judges and fans alike agreed on one simple fact-- No one was beating Kai Greene on this night. No way; no how!

Once this simple fact was established, the show turned into a fierce battle between the aesthetically blessed Craig Richardson, giant killer David Henry, German sensation Ronnie Rockel, and dark horse unknown Kevin English for 2nd through 5th places. While most in attendance thought the seasoned muscle maturity and sliced conditioning of Richardson would easily push him into the 2nd slot, the judges decided that English's freaky proportion and tiny waist was enough to give him the nod. Unfortunately for Richardson, he wound up placing a disappointing (yet Olympia-qualifying) 5th. English should be commended for his incredible effort and unexpected "resurrection" (as the t-shirt he wore stated) back into the world of world-class bodybuilding.

With English in 2nd and Richardson in 5th, this left the door wide open for the symmetrically pleasing Ronnie Rockel. After a disappointing 13th place at the 2008 IFBB Arnold Classic earlier in the year, Rockel returned to the form that won him the IFBB Australian Grand Prix back in 2006. And if this guy ever tightens up his glutes and hamstrings, we'll be seeing him in the winner's circle of a lot more contests!

Despite a top 10 finish at the 2007 IFBB Mr. Olympia, David Henry has yet to duplicate the incredible conditioning he displayed at the IFBB Olympia Wild Card several years ago. He did, however, bring a well-balanced, ripped, physique to New York and for his efforts, "The Giant Killer" placed 4th and qualified for the 2008 IFBB Mr. Olympia contest in September.

Under 202 Class
From the depths of the leg room at Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym in Syosset, NY, Kevin English reinvented himself from the 285lb overweight gym monster that he was to the ripped freak with the non-existent waist that enabled him to win the inaugural Under 202 Class at the 2008 IFBB New York Pro Show. English's symmetry is flawless and while his presentation could definitely use work, his dominance in this weight class couldn't be denied. 1st Place and a nice paycheck should help motivate English to stay on track and concentrate on the Under 202 Challenge at the 2008 IFBB Mr. Olympia.

David Henry, 2nd, fought a tough battle with English; however, when all was said and done, Henry's slightly watery appearance in his lower body cost him a victory that seemed to be a lock in the weeks leading up to the show. Henry needs to reevaluate his contest prep methodologies and he has to focus on conditioning as his main priority if he's gonna hope to beat the likes of a Kevin English come Olympia time.

Grabbing 3rd place and the final 202 IFBB Mr. Olympia qualifier spot was former NPC Nationals heavyweight and overall champion Jason Arntz. Arntz took a chance and dropped down to a weight he hadn't visited since he won the light heavyweight class at the NPC USA Championships over 10 years ago today; and this retro experiment proved to be just what Arntz needed to revitalize a career that had taken many steps backwards in recent years. While I've seen Jason harder in the past, his physique is definitely made for this class. If he can tighten up his legs and glutes and bring up his arms a tad, he'll be a legitimate contender for the Olympia 202 Challenge.

Iris Kyle Was Not Disqualified From The 2008 Ms. International

Flexonline.com and Bodybuilding.com all erroneously reported that IFBB Ms. Olympia Iris Kyle was disqualified from the 2008 IFBB Ms. International female bodybuilding contest in Columbus, Ohio last month. (Iris was NOT disqualified; she actually placed 7th place just out of the money.) Ruth Silverman from Iron Man Magazine fairly criticizes the Internet rumor mill.

A text message from a friend wanted to know what was up with Iris being disqualified… It was reported on Bodybuilding.com and by Shawn Perine at FlexOnline…I couldn’t help marveling at the human capacity to believe something just because someone said it on the Internet - and to hear only certain key words.

We humbly apologize to our readers and particularly to Iris Kyle for the misinformation.

Iris Kyle appeared on Pro Bodybuilding Weekly last night to discuss the controversy surrounding her seventh place finish at the Ms. International contest. We hoped she would have insight on the reasons she was undeservedly dropped to seventh place.

I absolutely can not, at this point, really tell you what happened… I’m still quite puzzled. From the judges standpoint, I have received no feedback leaving me with… thousands of unanswered questions to this day. I made a couple of calls… but I couldn’t get through to who I would love to speak to.

It was quite disappointing that the judges were reluctant to offer specific feedback to Iris regarding their controversial decision. In absence of this feedback, Iris addressed the suggestions that “bumps” on her body were responsible for her placing.

"I rather would have seen after the first round that one of the judges come up to me and say, look we have made a decision that based on reviewing your physique we think we need to pull you out of the show I could respect that and walk away with my head even higher and it’s still high

The IFBB should have stepped in and made their call and not allowed me to finish the show."

We agree with Iris. If the IFBB were trying to make an example out Iris for having bumps on her glutes, they should have either disqualified her or placed her last. Later in the radio broadcast, Larry Pepe interviewed Sandy Ranalli, head IFBB judge at the 2008 IFBB Ms. International contest. She confirmed that the bumps were responsible for Iris Kyle’s placing referring to them as “distortions in her physique.”

"Her shoulders were a little bit you know distorted. There were distortions in her glute area.. At this level of competition, [there is] not a big difference between athletes, those things come into play… It was the distortion and not trying to figure out what it was."

The big question is why the IFBB felt the need to knock Iris Kyle out of the money when, in our opinion, the slight bumps did NOT distract or take away from her Ms. Olympia caliber-physique.

Furthermore, if the bumps were such a distracting or grotesque “distortion,” why did Iris still place ahead of so many other competitors. We are only left to speculate…

Iris refuses to allow this to get her down and she is ready to move past the controversy:
"I’m a true champ, so it’s not going to get me down. I’m going to keep plugging away."

Team MuscleTech Dominates the 2008 IFBB Arnold Classic

As one massive physique after another took its position under the bright lights of the 2008 IFBB Arnold Classic stage, the floorboards of the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus, Ohio creaked under the weight of the heavily muscled line-up. There was a sense that the judges were going to have their hands full on this night, as these were some of the most muscular and striated physiques since the 2007 IFBB Mr. Olympia. But even in this line-up of champions, one stood out above all the rest.

Being edged out last year by the narrowest of margins for a potential three-peat, the consistently super-shredded Dexter Jackson was not to be denied this year as he stepped into the spotlight on Saturday, March 1st, winning the 2008 IFBB Arnold Classic for the third time in the last four years! Although competition was tight for the top spot, Dexter didn’t disappoint with more thick muscularity that was sliced and diced from head to toe – confirming, yet again, why they call him ‘The Blade.’ Looking bigger and tighter than at the 2007 IFBB Mr. Olympia, the, Freakin Rican, Gustavo Badell showed why he has quickly become a fan favorite by setting the crowd into a frenzy with a uniquely crafted posing routine.

The heavily muscled Branch Warren also brought an impressive package to the Arnold’s this year, carrying over 250 pounds of perfectly-proportioned muscle, in the way we’ve come to know him best – a signature thick chest, massive round delts and full arms, all fixed atop a set of shredded wheels.

But, it wasn't just on stage where Team MuscleTech dominated. When the doors to the largest expo in bodybuilding opened, it was clear to everyone in attendance that Team MuscleTech ruled the Arnold's. Thousands of the most hardcore fans from around the world swarmed the MuscleTech booth to meet the biggest names in bodybuilding, and get their free samples of the hardest hitting nitric oxide formula – naNOX9, the World's Strongest Vaso-Anabolic Psychoactive Experience – naNO Vapor , and be the first to experience the World’s Most Hardcore Anabolic Growth-Inducing Formula – Anabolic Halo. Chris Cormier, a bodybuilding legend who has a loaded resume with over 30 top-3 pro finishes and who has dominated the field and claimed victory 11 times, manned the Team Muscle Booth and was looking incredible. Other Team MuscleTech superstars like Melvin Anthony, Dexter Jackson, DeShaun Grimez, David Henry, Branch Warren, Gustavo Badell, Darrem Charles, Johnnie Jackson, Ben White and even 2-time Mr. Olympia himself, Jay Cutler were all in attendance at the booth to spend time with their fans.

Congratulations goes out to all the Team MuscleTech Athletes that competed in the 2008 Arnold Classic and thanks to everyone for making this year's Arnold weekend the most successful ever! We can't wait for next year!
