Inside Supplements: CEE & Kre-Alkalyn Debunked!

Presented by Dr. Mark Tallon at the recent ISSN Conference:

Creatine ethyl ester rapidly degrades to creatinine in stomach acid

Creatine ethyl ester (CEE) is a commercially available synthetic creatine that is now widely used in dietary supplements. It comprises of creatine with an ethyl group attached and this molecular configuration is reported to provide several advantages over creatine monohydrate (CM). The Medical Research Institute (CA, USA) claim that the CEE in their product (CE2) provides greater solubility in lipids, leading to improved absorption. Similarly San (San Corporation, CA, USA) claim that the CEE in their product (San CM2 Alpha) avoids the breakdown of creatine to creatinine in stomach acids. Ultimately it is claimed that CEE products provide greater absorption and efficacy than CM. To date, none of these claims have been evaluated by an independent, or university laboratory and no comparative data are available on CEE and CM.

This study assessed the availability of creatine from three commercial creatine products during degradation in acidic conditions similar to those that occur in the stomach. They comprised of two products containing CEE (San CM2 Alpha and CE2) and commercially available CM (Creapureƒ). An independent laboratory, using testing guidelines recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), performed the analysis. Each product was incubated in 900ml of pH 1 HCL at 37± 1oC and samples where drawn at 5, 30 and 120 minutes. Creatine availability was assessed by immediately assaying for free creatine, CEE and the creatine breakdown product creatinine, using HPLC (UV).

After 30 minutes incubation only 73% of the initial CEE present was available from CE2, while the amount of CEE available from San CM2 Alpha was even lower at only 62%. In contrast, more than 99% of the creatine remained available from the CM product. These reductions in CEE availability were accompanied by substantial creatinine formation, without the appearance of free creatine. After 120minutes incubation 72% of the CEE was available from CE2 with only 11% available from San CM2 Alpha, while more than 99% of the creatine remained available from CM.

CEE is claimed to provide several advantages over CM because of increased solubility and stability. In practice, the addition of the ethyl group to creatine actually reduces acid stability and accelerates its breakdown to creatinine. This substantially reduces creatine availability in its esterified form and as a consequence creatines such as San CM2 and CE2 are inferior to CM as a source of free creatine.

Kre-alkalyn® supplementation has no beneficial effect on creatine-to-creatinine conversion rates.

Tallon MJ1 and Child R21

University of Northumbria, Sport Sciences, Northumbria University, Northumberland Building, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, 2Department of Life Sciences, Kingston University, Penrhyn Rd, Kingston-upon-Thames, United Kingdom. DrTallon@CR-Technologies.net

All American Pharmaceutical and Natural Foods Corp. (Billings, MT, USA) claim that Kre-alkalyn® (KA) a “Buffered” creatine, is 100% stable in stomach acid and does not convert to creatinine. In contrast, they also claim that creatine monohydrate (CM) is highly pH labile with more than 90% of the creatine converting to the degradation product creatinine in stomach acids. To date, no independent or university laboratory has evaluated the stability of KA in stomach acids, assessed its possible conversion to creatinine, or made direct comparisons of acid stability with CM.

This study examined whether KA supplementation reduced the rate of creatine conversion to creatinine, relative to commercially available CM (Creapureƒ). Creatine products were analyzed by an independent commercial laboratory using testing guidelines recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). Each product was incubated in 900ml of pH 1 HCL at 37± 1oC and samples where drawn at 5, 30 and 120 minutes and immediately analyzed by HPLC (UV) for creatine and creatinine.

In contrast to the claims of All American Pharmaceutical and Natural Foods Corp., the rate of creatinine formation from CM was found to be less than 1% of the initial dose, demonstrating that CM is extremely stable under acidic conditions that replicate those of the stomach. This study also showed that KA supplementation actually resulted in 35% greater conversion of creatine to creatinine than CM. In conclusion the conversion of creatine to creatinine is not a limitation in the delivery of creatine from CM and KA is less stable than CM in the acid conditions of the stomach.

Royce Gracie Suspended, Fined For Steroids

Yet another MMA fighter has tested positive for steroids and this time it’s legendary Royce Gracie.

The California State Athletic Commission released information Tuesday at 5:35 p.m. from tests results that showed Gracie’s two samples revealed traces of nandrolone metabolite.

Gracie, 40, last fought on June 2 on a FEG fight card held at the Los Angeles Coliseum. He won by decision against Japan’s Kazushi Sakuraba. A prior fight that took place a year ago against Matt Hughes in Los Angeles did not have steroid testing in place.

The Brazilian jujitsu master is suspended for the remainder of his license that ends on May 30, 2008. Gracie has been fined $2,500, the most that can be levied by the Commission.

It was the third successive day that the Commission released information that a professional fighter had tested positive for steroids. Boxers James Toney and Dan Batchelder who fought each other on May 24, were discovered to have two forms of steroids in their samples. Also, MMA fighters Johnnie Morton and Tim Persey tested positive for steroids and drugs respectively this week.

“Use of steroids is simply cheating,” said Armando Garcia, CSAC executive director. “It won’t be tolerated in this state.”

Nevada also has steroid testing in place.

Universal Nutrition Being Sued for Steroid-Tainted Supplements

Guillermo Coria, once the No. 3-ranked tennis player in the world, is suing American nutritional supplement manufacturer Universal Nutrition, claiming its steroid-contaminated vitamins led to a positive doping test and a suspension that cost him millions.

In a trial set to begin Monday in New Jersey state Superior Court in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Coria will seek to clear his name and will ask a jury to award him in excess of $10m for lost prize money and endorsements, his lawyers said. “Guillermo was suspended at the time when he was rising to the top of the world in tennis when he was really most valuable,” attorney Mr Will Nystrom said yesterday.

He said Coria was 19 when he was suspended in July 2001 after he had a positive urine test for steroids while playing at a tournament in Barcelona, Spain.

Mr Nystrom said the only supplement Coria was taking then was a multivitamin made by Universal Nutrition of New Brunswick. The Argentine player’s family had the multivitamins tested by a lab, which found them to be contaminated with steroids. That led the ATP to reduce his suspension from two years to the seven months that already had passed. Coria then had to battle back in the rankings.

“He grew up in a village in Argentina. He was named after (tennis great) Guillermo Villas. His father was a tennis coach and he’s been playing tennis all his life,” Mr Nystrom said. Now 25, Coria worked his way back up in the sport and was ranked in the Top 10 in 2003, 2004 and 2005, his lawyer said. Injuries since have kept Coria out of the Top 100, and he did not play in the just-concluded French Open.

Since the lawsuit was filed in 2003, Universal Nutrition has admitted in court that it produced steroid-containing products and multivitamins on the same machines on the same day at its factory, Mr Nystrom said.

A spokesman for Universal Nutrition did not immediately return calls seeking comment. The company also does business under the name Universal Protein Supplement Corp, according to Coria’s lawyers. As a result of his suspension, his lawyer said Coria lost bonuses he could have earned based on his ranking and tournament performances under endorsement contracts he had with Prince, a maker of tennis rackets, and Adidas, the sneaker and apparel manufacturer.

Mr Nystrom said Coria also missed out on endorsements from companies outside the sports world. Coria plans to attend the trial with his wife and parents.

Richard Jones Has Officially Retired From Competitive Pro Bodybuilding

Posted by IFBB Pro Richard Jones:

"Although I love bodybuilding, it's just not the same anymore.

In retrospect, after the 2004 Mr. Olympia, just merely competing at the event fulfilled much more than I ever hoped for.

So walking away was really no big deal to me. After all, I walked away with my health and lots of pride for what I had already accomplished and that means more to me than a potential first place award somewhere down the road. I don't and haven't been keeping up with the current events of the whole bodybuilding world due to my other passions and obligations.

But you have heard it from me. I have officially retired from competitive bodybuilding.

Sincerely,
Richard Jones"

IFBB Pro Kris Dim Suffers Heart Attack and Stroke

IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Kris Dim collapsed yesterday and had emergency heart surgery to repair a split in his aortic valve. The split in his valve caused a significant stroke that could have caused significant damage or death.

Kris is speaking and has controlled movement of all limbs and appendages.

As quoted by Kris' workout partner: "I am Kris's partner at his personal training studio and unfortunately the rumor is true...Kris went down yesterday at the studio and had emergency heart surgery to repair a split in his aortic valve...they thought that he was gonna be paralyzed because he did have a pretty significant stroke but i just visited Kris and he is moving all limbs and he is speaking and coherent. They gave him a 10% chance of surviving the surgery but the big guy pulled through and it truly is a miracle. If there are any questions post them on here and i will do my best to answer them as the information comes my way; thank you and God bless."

Inside Bodybuilding wishes Kris all the best for a speedy recovery!
